Perhaps you’re reading this and feeling you don’t have clarity yet, that you’re not sure what your values are or what you want to focus on. That’s perfectly alright. This isn’t something we figure out once and then we’re done. It’s an ongoing exploration, a deepening understanding that unfolds over time.
Start where you are. Start with what you do know, even if it’s just one small thing. Perhaps you know you want more peace in your life, or more joy, or more connection. That’s enough to begin with. As you pay attention, as you reflect, as you experiment with what nourishes you and what depletes you, the picture will become clearer.
Or perhaps you’ve done this work before, you know your values well, but you’ve drifted from them. That’s alright too. This is your invitation to come back, to realign your life with what matters most. There’s no judgment in the drifting, only the opportunity to begin again, to choose again, to remember what’s true for you.
Our Focus for the Year
Once we clarify our values we can begin to think about focus. Not goals, necessarily, though those might come later. For now, we’re simply asking: given what matters to me, where do I want to place my attention this year? What wants to be nurtured, developed, explored, healed, created, or released?
We may notice that one of our core values hasn’t been getting much attention lately. We value health but haven’t been moving our bodies. We value creativity but haven’t made anything in months. We value learning but haven’t picked up a book in ages. This year’s focus could be to bring ourselves back into alignment with each value, about giving it the time and energy it deserves.
The beautiful thing about focusing on one or two key areas is that it gives us permission to let other things be good enough. We can’t do everything brilliantly all at once, and trying to do so only leads to exhaustion and disappointment. But we can choose where to place our deepest attention, where to really invest ourselves, and trust that other areas of our lives will take care of themselves well enough while we do.
The Practice of Reflection
None of this clarity comes from rushing or forcing. It comes from reflection, from giving ourselves the space and time to think deeply, to feel into what’s true for us, to listen to the quieter voices beneath the noise. This is why we need to build reflection into our lives, not just once at the beginning of the year but regularly, consistently, as an ongoing practice.
We might journal, discovering what we think by writing it. We might take long walks, to settle our minds and create space for insights to surface. We might sit quietly with a cup of tea, simply being with ourselves, noticing what arises. We might talk things through with someone we trust, hearing ourselves speak our truths out loud.
What matters is that we give ourselves regular opportunities to step back from the doing and into the being, to check in with ourselves, to make sure we’re still pointed in the direction that feels true. Without this, we risk sleepwalking through our lives, efficient perhaps but not alive, productive but not purposeful.
