This month I want to talk about something a little bit different.
In my work with people, we cover a lot of topics –
their career,
their finances,
their relationships,
how they see themselves.
And gradually, over a period of time, particularly this year, when external events are so challenging, there’s one question that has cropped up as I’m listening to them that I haven’t actually worked with them on yet. Because I wanted to be clear what it was I was recognising, sensing, feeling. So I applied it to myself first.
And the question is, something like this:
Who do you belong to?
You have a career, you have a relationship, you have a home, you have friends. You may be financially secure. But when you stand in all of those areas, who do you belong to?
Are you someone who spends the time wanting to be liked?
In which case, you belong to the people you’re looking to to like you.
Are you someone who wants to teach?
In which case, you belong to the topic you want to teach.
Are you someone who sees yourself as above others?
In which case, you don’t want to belong to anybody.
And in truth, when you feel that superior, you don’t even belong to yourself because you’re not seeing your flaws, you’re only seeing what’s wonderful about you.
When we belong to ourselves, we’re comfortable in any situation sharing how we see the world, our life, our friends.
We’re comfortable because we’re not critical, we’re not judgmental.
We don’t put others down in order to feel good.
We share.
Basically, we speak from the heart.
